UPDATEDat 4:15 p.m. with arrangements.COLLINSVILLE • Madison County Circuit Clerk Matt Melucci has lost a battle with cancer.Melucci died overnight at his home in Collinsville, according to his office.Melucci had been the clerk of the circuit court since 1992 and Madison County Democratic Party chairman since 2007. He announced in September he would not be a candidate for a fifth term as circuit clerk in this year's elections."He was one of the best-loved and respected individuals you could find," said Judy Nelson of the circuit clerk's office.An Army veteran, Melucci held a bachelor's degree in city planning and sociology from Rutgers University and a master's degree in urban affairs from St. Louis University.He was Madison County's first director of administration, beginning in 1975. He became executive director of the East-West Gateway Council of Governments in 1979 and served as U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello's chief of staff from 1988 to 1991.Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Collinsville. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, followed by burial at Sts.
